A major new RVC study has just shattered the myth that popular “designer” Poodle crosses are automatically easier, calmer or more family-friendly than their pedigree parents - but it also reminds us how important it is to set these affectionate, people-loving dogs up for success.
What the researchers did
- The team analysed caregiver-reported behaviour from 9,402 UK dogs using a large online survey.
- They focused on three in-demand Poodle crosses - Cockapoos, Cavapoos and Labradoodles - and compared them with their purebred parent breeds: Cocker Spaniels, Cavalier King Charles Spaniels, Labrador Retrievers, and Toy, Miniature and Standard Poodles.
- Owners were asked about a wide range of undesirable behaviours, from aggression and reactivity to separation issues, noise sensitivity and problems on walks.
Key findings on behaviour
- All three Doodle types showed higher levels of undesirable behaviour than at least one of their parent breeds, contradicting the idea that crossbreeding automatically “fixes” behaviour.
- Cockapoos stood out as the most challenged overall, scoring higher than their parent breeds on multiple unwanted behaviours.
- Labradoodles were more of a mixed bag: they scored worse in five behaviours, but better in six, including dog and owner-directed aggression than pedigree Poodles.
Everyday problem behaviours
- Sadly many Doodles were more likely to show fearfulness, reactivity to noises or strangers, and difficulties being left alone compared with at least one of their parent breeds.
- These issues show up in real life as barking at visitors, pulling or lunging on walks, struggling to settle, or finding busy family homes overwhelming.
What this means for dog parents
- Don’t assume better behaviour just because a dog is a crossbreed or marketed as a “family-friendly Doodle”.
- Behaviour is shaped by genetics, early experiences, training and environment - and high-energy, intelligent Doodles can easily become overwhelmed or under-stimulated without the right support.
- Unrealistic expectations (“easy, hypoallergenic teddy bear that loves kids”) can increase the risk of bites, stress for dogs and eventual relinquishment when reality does not match the sales pitch.
At Omni, we absolutely love Doodles - and every other type of dog. These dogs are often deeply attached to their families, clownish, clever and incredibly affectionate. None of this research means they are “bad” dogs; it simply means they need thoughtful breeding, realistic expectations and the right support so their big hearts and big brains can truly shine.
How Omni can help: vet, behaviour and calming support
Behaviour and health are deeply intertwined: anxious, hyper-aroused dogs often sleep poorly, struggle with digestion and are harder to keep at a healthy weight - exactly the kinds of issues Omni’s science-backed nutrition and expert team are designed to support.
Alongside complete, balanced, novel-protein diets that support gut health and calmer, more stable energy, Omni offers a dedicated Vet & Behaviour Service where dog parents can book one-to-one consultations with our in-house vet and behaviour professionals for personalised advice.
Whether you are living with a sensitive Cockapoo, a high-octane Labradoodle or a classic Labrador, you can book in to discuss behaviour concerns, diet tweaks and practical home strategies - helping your dog feel safer, happier and easier to live with, while you get clear, jargon-free guidance from experts who understand both health and behaviour.

A kinder, more honest future for Doodle dogs
This research is a wake-up call for breeders, brands and dog parents: crossbreeding does not magically erase behaviour risk, and marketing should never override welfare.
At Omni, we champion evidence over hype - and we celebrate all dogs, from designer crosses to beloved mongrels. Every dog deserves compassionate, science-led care.
If you are worried about your dog’s behaviour, or just want to get ahead of problems, you can book an Omni Vet or Behaviourist consultation and pair it with our diffuser and stress supplements to start putting a tailored, kind and evidence-based plan in place today.
