Common household hazards for our dog companions

Common household hazards for our dog companions

There are many common household food and products that we see causing huge issues when dogs get their paws on them.  We have listed the ones that our vet team has seen most often below.  If you think your dog has eaten something inappropriate, please contact your vet for advice as soon as possible, as the outcome is very time sensitive, and the ‘wait and see’ approach can have devastating outcomes.

🍫Chocolate - this contains a chemical called ‘methyxanthine’, which is more concentrated the darker the chocolate is. This is bad for your dog’s liver, and can result in upset tummies, but also cause neurological issues like seizures.  It is also a cumulative toxin, so symptoms come on over time if a dog is fed small amounts regularly.

🍇Grapes (including raisins) - these contain tartaric acid, which can cause vomiting, diarrhoea and in severe cases, kidney failure.  Different grape varieties have different concentrations of this chemical, some may cause less severe symptoms than others, but because of how potentially fatal grape toxicity can be, it really isn’t worth the risk.

🌰Garlic (and other members of the onion family) - thiosulphate is the toxin present here, which can damage red blood cells and result in anaemia.  It can also cause vomiting and diarrhoea. Symptoms following exposure can be delayed for up to a week.

🍷Alcohol - dogs don’t metabolise this well, and if a large amount is ingested and left untreated, it can be fatal.

🥑 Avocados- this one is a bit of a surprise, while not highly toxic to dogs, avocadoes contain ‘persin’ which dogs can’t digest, and can cause vomiting and diarrhoea

🧀 Blue cheese - the colour in these comes from a mould, which can adversely affect a dog’s nervous system, another risk of seizures

🚬 Nicotine - cigarettes are not only potentially dangerous for people - but dogs too.  Second hand smoke can affect dogs airways, and cause similar respiratory problems as seen by their guardians - like bronchitis, allergies and lung cancer.  However it’s not just the smoke that can cause a problem - eating tobacco can also affect our canine companions - it doesn’t take very much, and can result in vomiting, diarrhoea, high heart rates, seizures, and worst case scenario, loss of life.

🌱 Plant bulbs - these may be a gardener’s friend, but the same is not true for dogs.  They contain lots of chemicals to support plant growth, but what causes the most concern is the alkaloids, which are commonly found at high concentrations in ornamental plants, like daffodils and tulips.  Clinical signs include drooling, vomiting, diarrhoea, cardiac arrhythmias, seizures, and death.
