Can dogs get hayfever? Or are we sneezing alone...?

Can dogs get hayfever? Or are we sneezing alone...?

The spring and summer months are a great time of year, with longer days, warmer temperatures, and ever increasing amounts of gorgeous plant and wildlife around for us to admire. These fill parks, gardens and fields with amazing smells and visions of loveliness as buds grow into leaves and flowers blossom.  However it can be a difficult time for anyone who suffers from hayfever, with streaming eyes and noses, and never having enough tissues!  We aren't alone in our suffering, as some of our canine companions can also be affected by tree, grass and flower pollens.

Signs of hayfever in dogs can present as sneezing, increased nasal discharge and watery eyes.  Coughing can also be a symptom, but it is less common.  These can range from very mild and only lasting for a few hours, to very severe and really impacting their daily activities for weeks on end.

There are medical treatments available to dogs, just like in humans who are badly affected.  Your veterinarian will be able to advise you as to what works best for your dog, but there are also some practical actions you can take at home to help, which can be done alongside the pharmaceutical options.

  • Avoid heavily scented flowers in the house - these can exacerbate the allergies.
  • Keep windows closed to keep the spread of pollen by air away from your home when it's feasible, but if your house gets very hot then you may not be able to avoid it.
  • Wipe your dog's paws down with a wet flannel when they come in from a walk as they can pick up pollen on their feet and bring it home.
  • Use an app to monitor the pollen count and avoid long walks in those days.
  • If your dog's eyes are badly affected them why not try a pair of 'doggles' - these are goggles designed for dogs that can protect their eyes from getting damaged by undergrowth when exploring heavy undergrowth for those prone to eye ulcers, but also reduces exposure to allergens.

Hayfever can be difficult to manage, but if your dog is struggling and the measures we've suggested aren't helping, please do seek advice from your vet and if you are a subscriber feel free to book in to have a complimentary consultation with one of our vets about this or any other topic.
