Palatability of vegan diets on par with those based on meat, according to university study

Palatability of vegan diets on par with those based on meat, according to university study

A study from researchers at the university of Winchester has shown that dogs like plant-based foods as much as meat. Of the 4,060 survey respondents, 2639 were dog guardians and selection criteria included a requirement to have been caring for their pet for at least one year prior to onset of the study. Dogs on a prescription or therapeutic diet were not included. The cohort of dogs were on varying diets, including: conventional, raw and in vitro meat-based diets, insect-, fungi- and algal-based, and vegetarian, vegan or ‘other’ diets. The most represented diet groups were conventional meat (1,370), raw meat (830) and vegan (336).

Guardians were asked to categorise their dogs’ reactions to normal meals on a scale of 1-5 (strongly disagree to strongly agree) via behaviours that have proven correlation with palatability (meaning how much the dog likes the food). These behaviours included: quickness of eating, approach to food, wagging of tail, sniffing of food, jumping, vocalisation, salivation, lip licking, staying near food bowl, and guarding of food.

Some pets were excluded based upon factors that would interfere with genuine results, such as competition with other animals at meal times. Other potential confound factors were assessed for such as age and sex/neuter status, which did not appear to affect owner reported behaviours, and activity levels, which appeared to minimally impact food-oriented behaviour.

Whilst there were some occasional and inconsistent differences between vegan diets, and both the conventional and raw meat diets, the researchers concluded that based on the analysis of the reported behaviours for different food groups, the evidence “did not support the position that vegan diets have poorer palatability, or compromise pet welfare, when compared to conventional meat or raw meat diets”. This conclusion was based upon the fact that the assessed behaviours did not generally vary between dogs that were fed conventional meat, raw meat and vegan diets. From these findings it was concluded that dogs enjoyed a vegan diet at least as much as those based on meat.
