Cultivated meat in pet food?

Cultivated meat in pet food?

Study assesses market for cultivated meat in pet foods.

Over recent years, many humans have reduced their consumption of meat due to varying environmental and ethical reasons. As many people care for pets that may consume meat, they may look for alternative options to provide adequate nutrition without meat consumption. A recent paper from the University of Winchester has assessed consumer perception of the use of cultivated meat in pet foods to understand whether this may be a useful option in the future.

Researchers looked at survey data from 729 people who had answered a variety of questions. Of the individuals that stated they themselves would eat cultivated meat (237), 81% said they would also feed it to their pets.

Interestingly, of the 491 people that were meat eaters, 40% said they would eat cultivated meat, whereas only 16% of the 238 vegans and vegetarians said they themselves would eat cultivated meat. However, of the rest of the vegans and vegetarians who stated they themselves would not consume cultivated meat, 56% stated that they would feed it to their pet. Conversely, of the remainder of meat-eating people that would not themselves consume cultivated meat (114), only 10% stated that they would feed it to their pet.

The study therefore identifies that the market for cultivated meat for consumption in pet food is very different from the market for cultivated meat for consumption by humans. Many respondents stated that they had reservations about how healthy cultivated meat was, which could be more easily addressed in the future once further development and testing is completed.
