Cat Meat To Be Sold As Pork – Another Horrific Food Scandal Involving Meat

Only this week, a horrifying story came to light where approximately 1000 cats were intercepted before illegally entering the human food chain under the guise of ‘pork’ or ‘mutton’.

In Zangjiagang, China – animal rights activists had noted wooden crates filled with cats being collected, taken to slaughterhouses.

The cats were thought to be intended to be sold and shipped south as mutton or pork, to enter the human food chain. Thankfully the cats have now been safely taken under the care of a local animal shelter that will determine if these cats are stray, or have been stolen.

Whilst this current episode seems shocking and geographically distant from us, there have been previous meat contamination stories in the past. Think back to the Horse Meat Scandal of 2013. The shocking revelation that in the UK and Ireland, ready meals and frozen foods across numerous major retailers and supermarkets were unknowingly being sold as ‘beef’, when in reality, the products were at times 100% horse meat.

This not only questions the trustworthiness of the meat quality and sources that we buy for ourselves and our pets- but also raises concerns regarding second hand drug ingestion. Horses are often treated with a strong anti inflammatory pain medication called Bute – which was consequently found in horse meat that entered supermarkets. Unknowingly ingesting second hand medications is a serious health risk to both humans and animals- but also with regard to antibiotic use, risks promoting resistant infections that will be harder to treat with antibiotics.
