Composting Dog Waste: A Guide for Eco-Conscious Owners

Composting Dog Waste: A Guide for Eco-Conscious Owners

If you're committed to sustainability and doing your bit for the planet, it’s likely you’ve already ditched single-use plastics, opted for renewable energy, or embraced plant-based meals (and perhaps your furry friend has joined the bandwagon too!). Yet, there’s one aspect of pet care that often gets overlooked: managing your pooch’s waste.

The typical dog generates around 275 pounds of waste each year. Multiply that by the number of dogs in the UK, and we’re talking about thousands of tonnes of waste ending up in landfill sites or seeping into delicate ecosystems.

Thankfully, there’s a more eco-friendly alternative — one that’s kind to the environment and surprisingly straightforward: composting dog waste.

At Omni, we believe that green pet ownership goes beyond just what goes into the food bowl. Here’s your guide to responsibly composting dog waste and reducing your dog’s environmental pawprint.

Why not simply bin it?

Most of us use plastic poo bags and toss them straight into the bin. Unfortunately, this sends organic material to landfill, where it decomposes anaerobically (without oxygen), releasing methane — a potent greenhouse gas.

Even “biodegradable” dog bags often fail to break down properly in landfill conditions.

And flushing dog waste? That can introduce harmful pathogens into waterways if not managed by specially designed systems.

Composting provides a more sustainable solution, transforming waste into a useful resource while keeping it out of landfill.

Can dog waste really be composted?

Yes — but it’s essential to do it safely.

Dog poo, much like human waste, can harbour pathogens such as E. coli, salmonella, and parasites like roundworms. This is why dog waste should never be added to your regular compost bin used for vegetables or edible plants.

Instead, use a dedicated dog waste composting system and follow safety guidelines to ensure the process remains hygienic and effective.

How to compost dog waste (the safe way)

Follow these steps to set up your own dog waste composting system:

  1. Select the right bin or system.

You can purchase purpose-built dog waste composters (such as Green Cone or Doggie Dooley), or create your own using a lidded bin embedded into the ground with drainage holes. Position it well away from vegetable gardens and water sources.

  2. Use suitable bags.

Avoid traditional plastic poo bags. Instead, choose compostable bags certified for composting (look for EN13432 certification in Europe). Better yet, use a scoop to transfer waste directly into the bin.

  3. Add carbon-rich material.

Composting requires the right carbon-to-nitrogen balance. Dog waste is nitrogen-rich, so pair it with materials such as:

    • Sawdust
    • Shredded newspaper
    • Straw or dry leaves

This helps control odour and speeds up decomposition.

  4. Use an activator.

Commercial compost starters or septic-safe enzymes can help accelerate breakdown. Add them regularly according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

  5. Aerate and maintain.

Turn or mix the compost every few weeks to keep oxygen flowing and reduce odours. Maintain moisture levels — it should feel like a wrung-out sponge.

Important safety notes

  • Never use dog waste compost on edible plants.
  • Apply it only to ornamental plants, shrubs, or non-food trees.
  • Always wash your hands thoroughly after handling the compost bin.

Bonus: plant-based diets make composting easier

Here’s an interesting fact: dogs on a plant-based diet often produce less odorous, more compost-friendly waste. That’s because these diets avoid heavy meat proteins, artificial additives, and poorly digestible fillers.

Omni’s plant-based recipes are designed to support gut health, resulting in better stool quality — making your composting efforts just a little more pleasant.

Eco-friendly pet care goes beyond waste

Composting dog waste isn’t just about disposal — it’s about taking a more thoughtful approach to every aspect of your dog’s life.

  • Choose plant-based dog food to reduce your carbon pawprint
  • Opt for recyclable or compostable packaging
  • Select durable, non-toxic toys and accessories
  • Offset emissions from pet travel or deliveries where possible

A final woof

Being an eco-conscious pet parent doesn’t require perfection — just mindful choices wherever you can make them. Composting your dog’s waste takes a little effort, but the environmental benefits are well worth it.

At Omni, we’re here to help you raise a happy, healthy dog while treading more lightly on the planet.
